Can Sandra Bullock and Academy Awards newcomers knock out previous nominees?

Amy Turman

It is always difficult for actors and actresses to knock out the traditionally "serious" actors. Sandra Bullock did win in 2010 for "Blind Side," although she is better known for more comedic roles like "Miss Congeniality." Reese Witherspoon also won best actress for her role in "Walk the Line," and she is known most for her appearances in "Legally Blond" and "Cruel Intentions."

While the Academy tends to favor older, more established stars, occasionally they will offer a newcomer a chance at the coveted Oscar by a simple nomination and sometimes even a win. "Newcomers" definitely have a chance to win, and other more-established actors seem to be understanding and welcoming.
