Can SAG and AFTRA members join AEA without an Equity contract?
Yes – performers who have worked under certain SAG and AFTRA contracts for one year can join without an AEA contract. Can non-members work under an Equity contract? Yes. When the contract is received at the office, a packet is sent out and the contractor may decide whether or not to join (not required to accept the job.) The system doesn’t punish the producer or employee for this. Who can grant performers/SMs status as Equity Membership Candidates (EMC)? Seasonal Producers with 3 years of deputy/SM reports which contain positive feedback can apply for this. In Portland, this is ART and PCS. EMCs receive 1 point per week. Once an EMC has received 50 points, they are eligible to become members. Until that point, they are not AEA members, and are not bound by AEA hiring rules.
