A true local area network requires connectivity via cat5 or an RJ-45 connector. RJ-11 is simply a telephone wire that does not have enough pins to connect to a LAN. If all computers on a LAN are using RJ-11 connections, you can setup a dial-up network. Unfortunately, the speed will drastically decrease. It is possible, however, to buy a cat5 (RJ-45) connector that converts it to USB. Or you can buy a wireless router and card for your laptop.
