Can retailers distinguish themselves in terms of the quality of electricity or in terms of reliability?
No matter which electric provider you choose, there is no difference in the power you receive at your home or business. Each retailer is responsible for procuring power from the various sources of power supply in the state, and it’s pretty unlikely that the exact electrons they purchase are the same ones you use when you’re running your coffee maker. If the electric provider fails to find enough power to meet the demand of its customers, the system operator (ERCOT) will step in. ERCOT will find additional supply to ensure that the available supply of power is equal to the forecasted demand on a system wide basis. So, you will continue to receive the electricity you require regardless of the provider you select assuming there are no disruptions in the transmission and distribution lines that deliver the power to your home or business.
