For children and teens we look at BMI, but take into consideration age, weight, and sex. The CDC has designed a BMI calculator for Adults & Children’s/Teens. Some staggering trends: (most recent data from 2007 cdc.gov) • Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee all had obesity rates of greater than 30% of their population. • Colorado was the only state under 20%. • 30 states recognized over 1 in 4 people to be considered obese. • Over the past 25 years children have gone from approximately 5% to 17% prevalence rates in obesity.
