Can Relational Frame Theory Account for Cognitive Disputing Techniques?

0

HANK ROBB (Pacific Institute for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) Abstract: Relational Frame Theory (RFT) offers an account of human language. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a set of conceptualizations and interventions for addressing human disturbance and dysfunction based on RFT. ACT stresses alternatives to cognitive disputation strategies used by many so-called cognitive-behavioral treatments such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. However, these kinds of interventions have been shown to have desirable effects at least some of the time. This paper explores why such interventions would be effective, to the extent that they are, from the perspective of RFT, thereby examining the ability of RFT not only to generate new intervention strategies but also account for the effectiveness of more traditional ones.
