Can radiation for cancer elswhere effect thyroid hormone production?
I have run across mention but not detail of possible influence on thyroid activity by radiation, which I assume meant radiation elsewhere in the body. I am prompted to post this inquiry because of the following. I had my thyroid removed because of cancer (10/2003 no radiation) and am currently still in process of having my thyroid hormones normalized. Prior to surgery, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. During May-June of 2003 I received radiation of the breast for a cancerous lumpectomy (2 sentinel nodes removed = benign), which I had performed in 11/2003. (Several factors influenced the delay between breast surgery and radiation, which are not in question.) I have had no chemo. Thanks.
