Can PTP operate over a wide area network (WAN)?
PTP Version 2 has been designed to span over a WAN. However, performance is dependent on the network configuration. For example, a router on the network would need to be 1588-aware to realize the superior synchronization capability. Otherwise, if the router is not 1588-aware, synchronization of PTP becomes equivalent to NTP. Version 1 was designed to work over a LAN. However, EndRun has a special version of its Grandmaster software that will work over a WAN. Contact Customer Support for information.
