Can privet hedge clippings be successfully composted?

Even though privet contains poisonous compounds, the toxins are broken down during the composting process so it is possible to compost privet. If you have a large quantity of clippings, it is best to compost them seperately rather than add them to an existing compost bin. Shred the clippings if you can. Mix the shredded prunings with some green material such as grass clippings to speed up the process and wait for six months to a year before using as a mulch around trees and shrubs.
