Can prediction markets be applied to other infectious diseases?
Prediction markets for infectious diseases have applications beyond influenza. With a proper pool of traders in place, new prediction markets could be created to address new emerging infectious diseases even before a specific etiologic agent has been identified. For example, when SARS emerged in 2003, scientists could have used their expertise to fuel prediction market for the disease. \Such a prediction market would have been especially useful given the absence of any preexisting SARS surveillance system.
