All such structures must be constructed in accordance with the North Carolina State Building Code Volume VII-Residential. 4. What is the difference between a landing and a deck? A landing is a platform at the top or bottom of the steps thirty-six (36) square feet or less in area. A landing should be a minimum of 3′ x 3′. A deck is an exterior floor system greater than thirty-six (36) square feet, for which a separate permit is required.
