Can Pinehurst Learn From Southern Pines?
Pinehurst citizens have watched Southern Pines twist and turn in great distress as Leith Automotive seeks to establish dealerships along U.S. 1, directly in front of upscale residential developments. This past week Councilman Smithson ripped recent Southern Pines councils for ignoring repeated warnings that such a bombshell was in the offing in view of the general business zoning for this property. This should ring an alarm bell in Pinehurst. It has several areas zoned neighborhood commercial along Midland Road and elsewhere. Other Pinehurst residents and I have repeatedly urged the Pinehurst Council to place a moratorium on all commercially zoned property in the village. A study should be conducted to determine whether such zoning is proper and needed today, in light of our recently adopted long-range plan and real-estate development since the original zoning was adopted. If this had been accomplished before the Midland Green proposals surfaced, the controversy would have been averted
