Can phytoestrogens help prevent fibroids?
Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring substances that have some of the properties of estrogen. Soybeans are rich in phytoestrogens. In addition to their estrogenic properties, some of these chemicals also appear to have other important properties that may be beneficial. Some scientists believe that: Phytoestrogens may be one of the reasons for a lower incidence of breast cancer seen among populations that consume large amounts of soy products. In addition, peri-menopausal women who consume 3 or more servings of soybean products (i.e. tofu, soy flour, soy milk, textured soybean protein) get enough phytoestrogens through their diet to provide significant relief from hot flashes. Phytoestrogens may provide some protection against calcium loss from bones. A search of the medical literature has not turned up any studies on the interaction of soybeans and fibroids. Additional investigation is needed in this area.
