Can people with cystic fibrosis have pets?

0

I have CF and I have lots of pets. I have dogs, cats, birds and horses. The only thing of pets would be reptiles like turtles because they are known to carry salmonella, but even so, careful handling and good hand washing can help prevent that. With pets you just have to be smart about it. With my dogs, they are not allowed everywhere in my house. They are limited to downstairs, so it helps that I can get away from them if they seem to bother me. Luckily my allergies don’t seem to bother me very much, but I do take a couple of allergy medications for it. Also, I don’t handle the kitty litter at all, that is one thing to avoid. So with cats you can have them just have someone else empty the litter box for you or if you had to have a litter box that cleans itself. Probably having a lot of pets isn’t the best for me, but they make me so happy. I love animals so much and to live without them would be terrible. My doctor says that I have to live my life, and that is what I am doing.

Pets are not a danger to people with CF except the water in fish tanks can be a source of infection. I think a gecko would be fine, although it’s probably best if someone else changes the water.
