Can people tripping on LSD distinguish between reality and hallucinations?
I never had an hallucination that extreme. My experience of LSD was a very long time ago. It was the 70’s, what can I say. I was always aware if what I was seeing was real or an hallucination. When I did have some mild hallucinations it was generally seeing things in a distorted way. Think of those psychedelic posters with the swirling geometric patterns, or the walls looked like they were breathing. I knew one person who told me about trying peyote. He said he had wild hallucinations, and he couldn’t tell them from reality. For me, that was a good reason to avoid peyote. Sometimes, where there is underlying serious mental illness, acid can bring it out in a tragic and dramatic way. I never had a “bad trip” or knew someone who did. I only ever did LSD in places and with people I was comfortable with. With LSD there was a period we called “peaking” where you feel really great, and just laugh and have a good time.
