Can Penn State finally beat Michigan?
The Nittany Lions started out like gangbusters against the Wolverines shortly after joining the Big Ten in 1993. They won three of the first four meetings, including twice in Ann Arbor (1994 and ’96). But since then, this series has been nothing but misery for Penn State, which has dropped eight in a row to Michigan. The Lions have been shutout twice — 27-0 in 1998 and 20-0 in 2001 — and have lost four other games by a touchdown or less. Two of those losses were heartbreakers, 27-24 in overtime in ’02 and 27-25 in ’05. Penn State coach Joe Paterno is 2-8 against Michigan’s Lloyd Carr. And the Lions are 1-5 at home against and 2-4 at the Big House. The Sept. 22 matchup could loom as a key early season showdown for the Lions.
