Some parrots have been known to learn to speak as many as 50 words. Parrots are excellent mimics. When they speak, the do not understand what they say. Don’t be fooled by the parrot that says “hello” when you enter. It might say the same thing when you leave. With careful training, parrots can be made to speak, sing and whistle. But they are not speaking in the same sense as we do. They are merely repeating sounds that they have heard. Interestingly, parrots are not the only birds that can produce human sounds. Mynas and crows can also be taught to speak. The most talkative parrot on record, an African grey that belonged to a London-based family, could speak as many as 1,000 words.
