Can other professionals (e.g., occupational therapists, dieticians) assess and treat dysphagia?
Dysphagia assessment and treatment are not covered by a controlled act. As a result, the assessment and treatment of dysphagia is within the public domain. Anyone can do it as long as they do not use a protected title or hold themselves out to be someone with a protected title. Members are advised to address this issue from a perspective of competency and risk of harm. The PPG for Dysphagia outlines the competencies required and risks in dysphagia management.
