Can organic food contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?

No. Any food sporting the USDA organic seal (or other USDA accredited organic seal) cannot have GMO’s as this would be in violation of the USDA NOP regulations which organic farms must follow to maintain their organic status. You can read the regulations (all 1500+ pages) at http://www.ams.usda.gov/nop Organic does indeed mean “not genetically modified by default” Any farm or company selling conventional food as organic faces a $5000 fine for each offense (sale) and the USDA does indeed enforce the organic rules so, for the most part, organic is organic.
