Can one keep room temperature low by traditional methods?

In the old days windows were opened on one side of the room and windows were opened on the other side and air was drawn through. They drank lemon aide and iced tea. A fan was put in a window when they were invented. Some would mist the curtains with water. They had shade trees and porches. Some hung up wet sheets. Not dripping. You could buy a small fan and put an ice chest with ice in front of it. A small fan would not run the bill up much. You could use the light from a window to read by and leave the light off during the day to make up for a small fan. A folded up towel could muffle the sound of the fan. Some wet wash rags on the ice would help. Some water in there too. Drinking cold water helps. Eating some cold food too. I saw an ice fan and a mist fan on the shelf with the other fans in Wal Mart. I did not take time to read what they were about. They were very small. They would be worth looking into.
