Can one fly off with an adult red fox?
Many thanks to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors for saving Mount Diablo! Thanks for understanding “… and caring. Dear Gary: I’m lucky enough to live in a part of Orinda with many trails in Tilden Park which we see from our kitchen windows and lots of trails that I can walk with my permit on EBMUD properties. A few years ago I was walking on an EBMUD trail close to San Pablo Creek and San Pablo Reservoir. I came around a corner and about 15 yards away I saw my first golden eagle feasting on a dead red fox. Not far from the eagle’s lunch were several vultures waiting for their turn. I didn’t think of it at the time, but a few days ago I passed the same spot and thought that fox was pretty big for a golden eagle to kill and then carry it to the open space to have its dinner. I know golden eagles, unlike bald eagles, don’t usually eat carrion. Is it possible for a golden eagle to kill a full-grown red fox and carry it in its talons to a clear space to drop and eat it?
