Can nursing and other clinical students be used to assist in the pandemic?
The Department of Health guidance sets out similar principles that should apply for non medical heathcare students. The main group affected will be nursing students. Normal education provision should continue wherever possible and students currently in practice should stay deployed. If education is disrupted by the pandemic and demands on the service increase it may be necessary to consider calling on students to maintain services. There will need to be a discussion with appropriate stakeholders on how and when non medical students can be used. In particular, there should be discussion with the local staff side about the use of students. Similar principles should be followed for non-medical students, eg, opting in to help, employment using an appropriate contract and payment at appropriate rate. Unlike for medical students there is not a nationally recommended list of duties that students could be asked to undertake. Local discussions with stakeholders will need to take place on this i
