Can NorPol specials drive and if so, can they use blues & twos?
Specials in Northumbria can apply for a basic driving course. This is a 3 day course and allows the officer to drive the Focus Panda cars (including estate NBM pandas). Some sit a half day driving assesment however the 3 day course is preferred for those able to attend it. Officers may NOT respond to incidents using blue lights and sirens but can attend hi priority incidents (if suitably experienced) at routine speeds. Officers may not attempt to stop vehicles using blue lights. If the vehicle fails to stop officers are not qualified or permitted to pursue. Officers may also seek certification to drive carriers/transits and 4×4 vehicles (on and off road).
