Can nonimmigrants take courses in FITs School of Continuing Education as non-degree students?
In accordance with federal regulations, FIT issues the I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status) only to students who have been admitted to a degree-seeking program. Non-degree students are NOT eligible for an F-1 Visa or status. Individuals already in the US in nonimmigrant statuses that allow studies incidental to their stays may do so. Generally, the following statuses allow studies while in the US: A-1/A-2, F-2, G-1/G-2/G-4, H-1/H-4, J-1/J-2, L-1/L-2. For specific information about the terms of status, consult your visa sponsor. Individuals in B-1/B-2 status may take non-credit-bearing courses in the School of Continuing Education provided these studies are incidental to their stay — in other words, they did not enter the US primarily to enroll in these courses.
