Can Nikon digital cameras be used for infra-red photography?
Nikon digital cameras are not designed to be used for infra-red photography. The infra-red light spectrum is just outside the visible light spectrum, humans cannot see this light however digital camera sensors are capable of recording a much wider range of the electromangentic light spectrum than is visible with the human eye. To solve this problem consumer digital cameras are designed to filter out light outside of the visible light spectrum so that cameras can produce an image which is as close as possible to what we see, this is done by using an infra-red filter which is fixed in front of the camera sensor, this filter is not removeable by the user. Each camera’s response to infra-red light depends on the design of the infra-red cut off filter, Nikon designers go to great lengths to remove as much of this infra-red light as is necessary to produce the closest image to what we can see with the human eye. This infra-red filter unit also has an anti-aliasing filter which removes high f
