Can new operations, roles, and tasks be added in Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0?
New roles and tasks can be created within Dynamics GP 10.0. Dynamics GP 10 was the first version of the product to use "Pessimistic" security, as opposed to previous versions, which were "Optimistic". This meant that, in GP 9 a new user had access to everything and rights were revoked, but in GP10 and GP 2010 a new user has no access and rights are granted.
To coincide with this change Microsoft released GP 10 with a number standard tasks and roles already created. It is sometimes necessary, however, to create a specific task/role for a select group of users.
The following is a simple example that can be used to explain a custom task/role.
There are 5 users who can create inventory items. 3 of those users can add pricing information and the other 2 should not have access to the price maintenance screen. The standard tasks and roles within GP would allow the users access to both the item maintenance screen and the price maintenance screen. In this scenario the administrator would remove access to the price maintenance screen from the standard task, and then create a new task which allows access to the price maintenance screen.
The 3 users who can change prices would then be assigned the standard task and the custom task while the other 2 users would only be assigned the standard task, thereby restricting them from the price maintenance screen.
Operations are base level functions within GP and these come built in to GP or are created when additional products are added to the GP installation. You can however create custom tasks and roles around such operations as Document Access and Smart List objects, that can then be assigned to specific users.

Roles and tasks may be added new or modified and copied from the default roles and tasks. An operation, or a base level element of security (such as a window, report, table, posting permission, document access, etc.), cannot be added directly into Microsoft Dynamics GP, but they are added, for example, when a new report or SmartList object is created, or a new Dexterity-based dictionary is added and registered.
