Can New Infineon Chief Reproduce Past Success?
Posted on: Wednesday, 28 May 2008, 06:00 CDT By From news reports Peter Bauer, who has been appointed the chief executive of Infineon, will face the tough task of replicating the success he had as chief of the Infineon division that made automotive and industrial chips and smart cards. Unlike his predecessor, Wolfgang Ziebart, a car industry veteran who some analysts thought tried to run Infineon as though the chip maker were just another manufacturing company, Bauer has a thorough understanding of semiconductors. As the chip industry emerges from a prolonged downturn, his expertise will be tested as the company tries to buck an industry trend by lifting profit margins at a time when all its competitors are also struggling. Infineon had hired Ziebart in 2004 for his experience with turnarounds. Before joining Infineon, he was deputy chief executive of Continental, one of the largest European tire makers.
