J-2 dependents may apply to the INS for permission to accept employment provided that earned income will be used to support the family’s recreational and cultural activities and related travel. Employment will not be authorized if this income is needed to support the J-1 student. A J-2 can apply for work upon arrival to the U.S. Back to the top.
