I am always happy for a patient’s partner or carer to accompany them to their treatments. It is then the patient’s choice as to whether they take a seat outside the room or observe the treatment. My approach is that anything that helps my patients to feel more relaxed and at ease during the treatments is to be encouraged. For this reason my partner Abigail is always willing to attend if her presence would help any of my female patients feel more comfortable. She often assists in my treatments anyway, but to be sure she can be there please give us plenty of notice. Further to the above, the treatment of some conditions can be greatly assisted when the partner, spouse or carer is at least as knowledgeable as the patient in terms of what we are trying to achieve: both in terms of treatment and the supportive measures we’re trying to put in place, or the health-skills the patient is trying to learn.
