Can my child receive accommodations for standardized testing through the 504 Plan?
Yes. However, in order to receive accommodations on standardized tests, the student must need and receive the accommodation on a regular basis in the classroom. It is unethical to provide accommodations only at the time of standardized testing. Also, the accommodation must be directly related to the student’s mental or physical impairment. For example, a diabetic student may need to check his blood sugar, use the restroom, or have a snack during standardized testing. An appropriate accommodation would be to administer the test in a small group setting to allow extended time. It would not be appropriate to read the test aloud to the student or allow the use of a calculator. Does the school system receive any funding for students who are eligible for Section 504? No. It is an unfunded mandate by the federal government. Where can I get more information about Section 504? The following website is an excellent resource: www.504idea.
