Can my 21 bayliner bowrider make it to Catalina Island from long beach?
On a calm day, you might be absolutely fine. However, I wouldn’t recommend it. It can be a rough ride out there once you get out between the mainland and the island. I would check tidal predictions and offshore weather conditions before I attempted it. I think the island is about 30mi off the coast. If your bayliner has an inboard (I think they all do…) then the fuel economy is somewhere in the 4.0-7.0 mpg range. Most Bayliners can carry about 20-24 gallons in the tank. If you’re careful and you were to keep the boat on a plane at/around 3200-3900 RPM (it’s different for every boat, but almost always between 3-4k), then you’ll be getting the best fuel economy you can ask for. If you aren’t careful, you’re going to lose fuel efficiency VERY fast. Boats are notorious for this. If you don’t get the rpm’s right, you’re loosing fuel efficiency dramatcially the farther you get from the “sweet spot.” With your boat, you should be able to get about 75-120 miles out of a tank.
