The highest of both Shia and Sunni scholarly bodies do allow transsexuals to undergo gender reassignment surgery, although for different reasons. Sunni scholars permit the operation as a treatment 2 whereas Shia scholars allow the procedures as there is no legal evidence against it in scriptural texts. 3 In fact, Ayatollah Al Khamaini also allows males who incline emotionally and sexually towards female behaviour to undergo such a procedure.
