Can molds cause health problems?
Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks in sensitive individuals. Mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of both mold-allergic and non-allergic people. These effects depend on: an individuals sensitivity or allergies; the type, duration, and amount of mold exposure; and the general health and age of the affected individual. Certain mold, including Stachybotrys chartarum and Aspergillus niger, may produce potent toxins (mycotoxins) that have been reported to yield human health effects ranging from skin rash to immune system suppression, acute or chronic liver damage, acute or chronic central nervous system damage, endocrine effects, and cancer.
