Can modern hunter-gatherers help us understand what life was like in the past?
The module examines the range of key issues in hunter-gatherer research in relation to both past and present societies. It draws on both archaeology and anthropology, studying first the range of modern day hunter-gatherers. It explores the variety and diversity of hunter-gatherer existence in both the past and present and students go on to look for useful comparisons between past and present hunter-gatherer societies at both a practical and theoretical level. The module looks at a range of different archaeological case studies, in particular the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic of Europe. This is an optional module in the third year for BSc (hons) Archaeology. It is assessed by coursework and exam – students write a 3000 word essay and sit a two hour exam.
