Can metronidazole be used for strep throat?

No. Metrondiazole is an anti fungal. Unless you have thrush, which is an oral yeast infection, an anti fungal would be useless. Usual treatment for strep (caused by Hemolytic Streptococcal) is Sulpha/Septra antibiotics.
