This data would seem to indicate that metal roofing is mostly poaching from other high-end roofing. Metal roofing requests jumped from 13,795 in 2007 to 18,814 in 2008. While asphalt roofing made a comparable increase over the same time period, other high-end roofing materials actually lost requests.
