In most cases, yes, since metal roofing weighs only 1/3 as much as shingles. This installation method also eliminates the costly problem of tearing off and disposing of old shingles. Metal roofing can be installed over 2″ x 4″ or 1″ x 4″ furring strips, 24″ o/c. In some cases, furring strips are not necessary and a layer of 30# felt or synthetic underlayment is applied before installation. Remember to refer to local building codes before you begin installation.
