29 ga metal only adds about 12 ounces per square foot to the roof. It can be installed over shingles, however you may want to consider stripping it with 2×4 or 1×4 furring strips 24″ on center. If the shingles are still laying flat and not beginning to curl you can apply a layer of 30# roofing felt.You should always refer to your local building code before you start.
