I dont know about white spots but my dad had a mouthful of mercury (silver fillings) and his postmortem MRI showed so many holes in his brain it looked like swiss cheese, yet he was a functioning coherent person, albeit miserable and short tempered, but certainly intelligent. The neurosurgeon said its amazing he could still function at all.
