Can members self-refer to a specialist?
Most specialty departments require a referral from a primary care physician. A referral is not required for the following services: obstetrics/gynecology, optometry, mental health, and alcohol/chemical dependency. Self-referred Ob/Gyn services must be received from providers within the primary care physician’s network. For example, if a member’s primary care doctor is from the MetroHealth Network, then her Ob/Gyn must also be from the MetroHealth Network. As of January 1, 2010, VSPĀ® Vision Care became the exclusive vision care provider for eye exams and prescription eyewear. With this new partnership, members will be able to receive eye exams and use their hardware allowance (if applicable) for glasses and/or contacts at any VSP provider throughout the U.S., of which 200 are located within Kaiser Permanente’s nine-county Ohio service area.
