Can massage help lymphoedema?
Yes but specialised training is required in order to treat lymphoedema safely and effectively. Heavy pressure massage techniques can worsen this condition. However good muscle tone and postural balance in body parts not affected by the oedema are very important. Massage therapists may treat outside any affected watersheds in secondary lymphoedema. This means the massage therapists must be very sure they are working only in areas where the lymph flow is not interrupted. Massage therapy should not be used for clients with primary lymphoedema in areas where the lymph vessels are deficient.
