Can magnetic rods be inserted in my humbucking instead of the steel studs?

You can use rod magnets in place of the studs and make sure the correct polarity is proper on the stud side of the humbucker. The stud polarity should be opposite from the adjustable side which is normally South polarity. You should have all the North polarity rod magnets facing up. The pickup will probably sound brighter with the modification of rod magnets properly inserted. If you put the magnets in wrong, the pickup will have phase problems and it can alter the polarity in the existing magnet.
