Newer, minimally-invasive techniques are now being utilized by surgeons to treat some patients with lung cancer. VATS, or video-assisted thoracic surgery, is performed using cameras and instruments placed through smaller incisions allowing complete removal of all cancer without having to completely open the chest cavity. This typically decreases the hospital stay by one half.
