CAN LIVING SHORELINE PROJECTS REALLY PROTECT MY PROPERTY FROM EROSION?

Yes, Living Shorelines can be very effective especially if designed and built to address the sites specific issues and dynamics. In summer 2005, the University of Maryland and Burke and Associates LLC evaluated the effectiveness of Living Shoreline treatments. The study assessed 8 projects total, which included marsh toe protection structures, groins with plantings, and low profile shallow water sills. Most projects were constructed between 7-12 years ago. This study was the first comprehensive assessment in the Chesapeake Bay to determine the success of Living Shoreline projects in providing erosion mitigation and habitat enhancement. The study provides a foundation of empirical information to understand benefits of these options and appropriate application of these treatments.
