Can Jews live together with Arabs in Hebron?
A. Jews and Arabs lived together for hundreds of years in Hebron. In 1540 Jews who had been expelled from Spain in 1492 made their way to Hebron and initiated the “Jewish Quarter,” today the “Avraham Avinu neighborhood.” These Jews lived surrounded by and amongst Arabs for hundreds of years. According to eyewitness accounts, at the beginning of the 20th century, Jews and Arabs lived together in Hebron as neighbors, with Jews speaking Arabic and Arabs who spoke Yiddish and Ladino.
