Can iPod Touch update iCal events to MobileMe over network?

I find that if I tether my iPod Touch to my MacBook and run a sync, calendar events which have been changed on the Touch get transferred to iCal on my MacBook and also on MobileMe, and it works the other way too (MobileMe to Touch). But over my local wifi network, the Touch doesn’t seem to feed changes to MobileMe or get updates (although maybe they arrive eventually). There is no problem with syncing Mail over the network. Is this supposed to work? The manual (for 3.1) seems to say that should, but I don’t know if I’ve got a special problem or I’m just expecting the impossible.
