Ich ‘whit spot’ cannot live without a host eg fish snail etc. But to kill it by starvation it is best to leave the tank ‘fish-less’ for a min of two weeks, longer if you can. (Also depends on what temp you tank is, if it hotter then ich breeds quicker if it colder it can be quite slow at multiplying, hence more then two weeks) The trick to beating this disease is definitely early detection.
