Can I write a letter to Italy asking for a birth certificate?
I think you would have more success searching for microfilm of the original documents. The Church of the Latter Day Saints (aka Mormons) has microfilmed Corato birth, marriage, and death records (aka Registri dello stato civile) for the years 1809-1910. I believe the film you would need is FHL INTL Film 1916511 which includes Nati (births) 1899 – 1900. Check their catalog to make sure (see familysearch.org) To find a Family History Center near you, click on Library tab, then Family History Centers. I found my Italian ancestor’s birth record this way (although he was in Calabria.) It was very exciting (although translating it took some time since I don’t know Italian!) I hope this helps! Good luck in your search!
