Can I use white rum to make vanilla extract instead of vodka?

Yep. This instructable says you can use vodka, brandy, gin, rum and several others. I would have thought that rum would be too strong tasting and add a molasses taste to the extract since rum is made of and tastes very much molasses. Or is that moleasses.
