Yes, it will be fine. Do not apply it thickly — a very common mistake. In fact, try to put it on as thinly as you can while still giving full coverage. Especially in perennial flower beds, mulch too thick can bury the root systems and essentially kill your garden. Many professionals even recommend removing all old mulch before putting new down.
